Wish this book was around when I was young

Danica McKellar left the Wonder Years and studied math. She has written Math Doesn't Suck to inspire girls to explore the world of numbers and equations. It might be worthwhile addition to any school library. Had it been around when I was a young thing, I probably wouldn't have developed math phobia.

Hi Julie. I love the looks of this book. I have been teaching math as ISSP for about 5 years now, and as a parent volunteer for about 8 years before that. I grew up in the school system believing that I did not have a math brain. It was only once I left school and was employed in the real world, that I realized I have an awesome math brain! I too regret.... I taught grade 8 math last year!! That was a tough year, because I had to study every single day and plan carefully a math lesson. I realized that I love math. Along with my passion for reading, I promote MATH to kids all the time. Especially those (boys and girls) that believe they can't. It drive me crazy the number of students who have picked up from their parents that they can't do math - "My mom couldn't do math either!" It is so ridiculous to pass that phobia or thinking on...

Good call on the book. I think it would be a smashing addition to any LRC collection.

Thanks Lorna. To do this day I still fear math. I wish that I could have the kind of epiphany you've had.

I too had been "conditioned" to believe that I was not a math person. Math tests and exams made me really nervous.

Congratulations on promoting math with such verve and passion!

I guess I do - promote math. I am somewhat surprised to see and read the items I realize I am passionate about. Reading - of course and forever and ever. Math is newer - about 8 years - but becoming a subject I wish to learn more and more about too.
Character Ed is the next big one. I see it as another area where the T-L can be an effective leader.
So to do - so little time!

I'm starting to explore character education too. Promoting reading and writing are my two main passions. I am passionate about the written word. I love words and plumbing their meaning.

I think your interest in math is wonderful. Students can sense when a teacher is passionate about her subject.
